Crazy research moments

So, I was driving home today and on the radio this guy (sounded sort of like the John Tesh top songs show) came on and started talking about the rise in loneliness in our country. He said it was a mini-epidemic based on some statistics (which he didn't quote) done by some various psychologists (which he never named). According to Joe Bob of No-wheres-ville, we live more independent lives and our technology, such as Facebook, has only increased the sense of loneliness we feel because we really want "face to face" interaction. Now, I might agree we like face to face interaction, but what gets me about this little news flash was how it relied on such ambiguous terms that most people would probably take for granted. I mean who is fact checking this stuff??? Hence the need for more people to be educated on research methods! So, yeah, research methods blog! We are on the enlightened path...LOL...or so we think :)

  1. Bonnie, as a former journalist I often "feel the pain" of my print and broadcast brothers and sisters, but I agree that dabbling in research and stripping it down to newsbites often causes more harm than good. It feels like all the warnings and things that go on about danger online. Sure there can be danger, but I think it's blown out of proportion sometime. It's like when researchers pull out only the bits of info that serve their purposes and then ignore the rest.
